Z39 - The National One Design Keelboat
a note from the builder.
The Z39 was the winner of a design competition commissioned by Yachting New Zealand. A boat that had a strict design brief of being 85% racer and 15% cruiser. It had to cater for both the annual two week Kiwi holiday with Mum and the kids, yet throughout the year be capable of keeping Dad entertained at the highest level of yacht racing. Performance is achieved on the yacht through a very efficient hull form and sail plan, high lift foils and a light but very stiff structure. The yacht is engineered and constructed tough enough to be capable of offshore racing such blue water classics as the Sydney-Hobart. Yet the modern large open cockpit and under deck controls means she sports the ultimate grand prix efficiency for around the buoys racing.
As we proceeded with the build of boat no.1 we were able to further develop the efficiency and styling of the boat. She also carries an impressive range of top of the line gear and equipment. High Modulus NZ Ltd. has engineered all structures of the boat all to ABS standards as a minimum, and we have identified key areas to increase global stiffness and weight reductions, thus all the shell laminates are of engineered fabrics with epoxy resins, vacuumed and oven cured. There is a healthy amount of carbon unidirectional in the bottom hull shell and side decks to add stiffness, coupled with Herex PVC and Baltek Supalite end grain balsa cores she has a true grand prix feel at the helm.
The aim of the yacht has been to create a racing yacht (with good creature comforts for cruising), brand the boat with the very best gear and reputations, then build it cost effectively using production methods so that it is an affordable 12m. racing yacht, without the price tag of a custom grand prix yacht.

You will agree we are trying to deliver the mature yachtsperson a very competitive boat with a lot of good features. My personal favourite is her impressive clean cockpit with the life raft locker in the centre, when harbour racing and without the life raft, this will surely be one of the biggest chilly bins ever on a yacht this size.
I have had a lot of fun putting this beautiful looking boat together as there is nothing quite like starting with a blank piece of paper. Building the structures smartly and strong to ensure the best from the adhesives, cores and fibres. When lives go to sea in a Hakes Marine built boat they can rest assured that the testing ground for Z39 was the formidable Cook Straight outside Wellington, a place where a padeye attachment to keel floor bonding cannot be taken for granted. To date our Z39s have passed these harsh conditions with a clean bill of health, true testament to their construction.
I am sure that this is currently the best value yacht in the market of this size and pedigree, especially when comparing equipment and performance. I look forward to personally helping with your specific requirements and ultimately building your dream.
