Projects'Hakes Marine' boat yard was established and set up in Wellington to build 'Zana' a brand new 30 meter maxi racing yacht for owner Stewart Thwaites. 'Zana' was designed by New Zealander Brett Bakewell-White and is a state of the art carbon fibre composite construction and incorporates the latest concepts in design, hull engineering, rigging, sails and trimming techniques. 'Zana' has a fixed keel but has opted to use a rival system of water ballast to optimise her performance. 'Zana' was launched in Wellington Harbour on the 18th of October and finished her first race, the Rolex Sydney Hobart in December 2003.While building Zana, Hakes Marine worked for two America's Cup syndicates 'Prada', Italy and 'Le Defi', France during the 'Louis Vuitton Cup' in Auckland 2003. For 'Prada' a new 10m. bow section to the sheer line including the mould was built and fitted for their ITA74 yacht in a time frame of less than three weeks. Simultaneously appendages for 'Le Defi' were built, the details of which still have to remain confidential. Hakes Marine also built the new keel for 'Starlight Express' a 55' Davidson, one of the best-known veteran racing yachts in New Zealand. Built in Wellington the keel was shipped and fitted to the yacht in Australia. 'Starlight Express' was ready in time to win the Rolex Sydney-Hobart 2002 in her Division. For local clients in Wellington, Hakes Marine has also fitted and finished two Farr designed 36' MRXs. Hakes Marine is class manufacturer for the new 'Yachting New Zealand' One-Design keel boat, the Z39. 'Jazz Player', the first 'Z39' was launched in May 2004. 'BMW Yachtsport' was launched in October. Hakes Marine recently completed two new Transpac 52 - 'Mean Machine' and 'Anonimo' the 'state of the art' racing machines from the design office of Judel Vrolijk. Following the world winning success of Mean Machine, John Buchan owner of 'Glory' has commissioned a brand new sister ship. The new 'Glory' will be leaving the shed early 2007 to head to the Med for next years Med Cup series. With a known winning machine he will have a great start to his season. Hakes Marine has just finished a complete refit inside and out for the Davidson-55 'Andiamo'. Stripping off the old teak from the decks and going with a new non skid racing finish. An icon of Wellington Harbour now sporting new colours. 'Miniky Ocean' a steel ketch that started construction 20years ago came to Hakes Marine uncompleted, without plumbing, machinery, electrical or even sailing systems in place. She is now complete after a 5 month sleep over in the workshop with hot and cold water to two bathrooms, and an electrical system that charges from the latest solar panel technology with satellite communication and email capacity on board. 'Shalimar' a Woolly designed 40' semi displacement launch needed some TLC. Bruce Askew did a fantastic job of redesigning a new flybridge that is in perfect harmony with the existing structure. Upstairs has an 'Alfresco' dinning area and with a new refit throughout she too is an icon of Wellington that has had a birthday. Reichel Pugh IRC45 - Hakes Marine is proud to be building two of these new exciting designs. It is an uncompromised grand prix racer built from carbon prepreg and Nomex core throughout. We are very excited to be working with the Reichel Pugh office for the first time and building for two well known and well regarded yachtsman Michael Brennan and Karl Kwok. Michaels boat 'Sjambok' will be first of out of the blocks to head off for Key West Race week. Karl Kwoks 'Beau Geste' will debut NZ waters early 2007. |
